Fuse Audio Labs have announced the release of VREV-63 Surf Spring Reverb, a new plug-in which models the sound of the Fender Reverb hardware effects unit originally introduced in the 1960s.
The plug-in offers a realistic emulation of the valve-based device, a unit which the company describe as the godfather of surf guitar sound. Some additional flexibility is on offer thanks to the inclusion of some popular modifications that were made to many original units, including a C10 capacitor mod that resulted in a deeper, richer reverb tone and the ability to blend between NOS 6K6 and 6V6 valve types. There’s also a selection of overall tonal options provided courtesy of three different spring tank choices.
A Dwell control sets how hard the input signal is driven into the modelled springs, defining the reverb’s intensity and time, and the company have meticulously emulated the Mixer and Tone dials found on the original design. The interactions between the latter two controls on the hardware unit resulted in a ‘tone suck’ effect that impacted the reverb’s high-frequency content, and Fuse Audio say that the same behaviour is also present in the plug-in.
Although the reverb is renowned for its sound when applied to guitars, VREV-63 promises to be more versatile, and is said to be a great choice for the likes of vocals, string instruments, synths and much more.
Compatibility
VREV-63 is supported on PCs running Windows 7 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.12 and above. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
