X-DynEQ is the first dynamic EQ to join SSL’s software range, and builds on the concept of the company’s X-EQ 2 plug-in in an effort to provide users with the definitive tool for all their recording, mixing and mastering needs.
The new plug-in comes loaded with 20 different EQ types and filter shapes — including new notch, band-pass and tilt variants not present in X-EQ 2 — and offers up to 24 bands, each of which can be set to operate either parametric or dynamic modes. With the latter mode active, Threshold, Attack and Release parameters become available in addition to the standard set of parametric controls.
X-DynEQ also expands on the GUI design that was developed for X-EQ 2, with users able to double-click the large visualiser display to add new nodes (bands), which can then be moved around and adjusted using a range of keyboard and mouse-wheel shortcuts. As you’d expect, any node can be set to any filter shape, and in addition to processing the entire stereo signal, they can also be configured to process just the left, right, Mid or Sides signals. The display also boasts a piano roll-style view that makes quick work of targeting frequencies based on their musical pitch, and a Focus mode that can be used to audition different parts of the stereo signal.
Compatibility
SSL X-DynEQ is supported on PCs running Windows 10 and above, and Macs running macOS 11 or higher. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
